SOFAS AND SPIDERS DON'T MIX

I have a situation that I'd love to get some advice on. I have this sectional sofa that's been in storage for over a year. Out of the elements, but not airtight and not heated in the winter nor cooled in the summer. So yes there's been a lot of bugs in that storage unit. In fact I've even seen those little balls stuck in webs that I believe to be spider eggs in different parts of the unit.

Well now I need the sofa. It was up off the floor, some sheets thrown over it, but it was not shrink wrapped or anything.

What would you do to it to make sure you didn't wake up with five thousand spiders crawling out of the thing? Is a simple bug bomb really going to be enough? Is there some company that will fumigate individual pieces of furniture? Do I just throw it out? I don't have arachnophobia, but I don't want thousands of miniature friends living rent free either. Your comments or emails would be appreciated.

And just another reminder, Mr. B's in Royal Oak tomorrow night (Saturday night) at 8 pm till maybe midnight, unofficial get-together. Scroll down for more info.

Hi Jeff. While I appreciate your concern I think a simple vacuum or cleaning of the couch will be fine. Good luck and take care.

Jeff,

I'm thinking you should bug bomb or fumigate it with a ton of spray while it's still in the storage unit. That way you can vacuum it out really good after everything's dead. Make sure that you use something that kills spiders. All those bug sprays kill different things.

OMG...Don't bug bomb the couch! Get one of those hand held steamers. With the wand you can hit a type of steam blast button and get into all those cracks and crevices. NO CHEMICALS NEEDED.

DO NOT Bug bomb the counch. The bug bomb will kill the insects, but it will also leave a poisonous residue on your couch. And since you have kids, you don't want that. Rent a steam cleaner from Home Depot for like $50 and get them that way.

Jeff, you have one hell of a dilemma. Being out of work, you can't afford to throw out the couch, if anything moves into the house, you want them to pay their far share. As others have said, vacuum the couch really good should do the trick.

Check it for mice as well... those things get into everything.

You should cover the sofa in plastic garbage bags and put it in a covered (preferable heated) place like a garage or basement. The bugs or spiders will hatch becuase of the heat created by the bags and will not have anywhere to go or to eat and will die. Nothing to buy...no chemicals.

Simple solution: leave it out in the cold for 48 hours after warming it up for about 24.

This will wake up any bugs that may be comatose in your couch then freeze them to death.

FOR FREE!

Good luck!
