Hey folks, Bill and I are launching a new afternoon drive show
on the east coast. It's actually a legendary FM Talker where we spent most of
the 90's before coming out to Detroit. New Jersey 101.5. We will be on
from 2 to 7 pm, Mondays thru Fridays. We're sorry to have to leave Michigan but
thrilled to have an opportunity not just to get back to work full time but for it to
be at a station that is one of very few left in the country that truly 'gets' it. A lot of my old co-workers are still there, my program director is a guy I've worked with before and respect and get along with well, so really this is great news for us.

I have only a few days left in Michigan, and I want to say thank you. Collectively, and some of you individually, well, you changed my life. JUST CHECKIN' IN...

Before my brain turns to total mush being mister mom thought I'd just check in and say hi. Kinda random, I know. Realized there were half a dozen comments since the San Francisco/Sacramento fill-in that I never even posted and I said Damn Deminski, get on it!

Since I last checked in Osama Bin Laden was killed. The conspiracy theorists are balls to the wall of course. Now I'm not a theorist. I never doubted we landed on the moon. I always accepted it could well have been one man who killed Kennedy. I don't think Obama photo shopped a birth certificate.

But why would you kill him and not take him into custody so secret it makes Area 51 look like an open air flea market and torture the shit out of this prick till you were absolutely certain you broke him as much as possible and gotten every last bit of information out of him as much as possible, THEN kill him. It's what I'd have done. Look at the endless stories of water boarding and other tortures trying to gain information from far less important al-qaeda members. How could you have the very head of the snake and let it go without learning as much as you could? I'm not saying he's not dead, all I'm saying is if they had done what I would have, then telling the world he's dead is much safer for everyone all the way around. Imagine the attempts to free him? The hostage taking to gain his release? Maybe it's just what I'd like to THINK happened. I'd like to think his suffering would go on for many months under impenetrable guard, followed by the slowest most excruciating death. Anyway, 90% of me glad he's already dead, 10% of me glad he'll be dead soon.

Oh, on a completely different note, I'm proud to see my four year old daughter was sent her first credit card pre-approval. At least someone in the family may not have damaged credit. House was just approved by banks today for the short sale so we'll be out of this house very soon.

Oh by the way I talked to Rudy the other day. He made the funniest video for one of his courses. I'll have to find out if I can post a link to it here for those who haven't seen it. He put himself in various movie scenes like screen tests of big parts he tried out for but didn't get. That's all I'll say. Hopefully I'll get a link here in next few days.

Mountain justice? NC dad accused of avenging son

Three months after Charles O'Shields' son was killed in an argument over a woman, the grieving father found the man charged with his death at a Dollar General store in the North Carolina mountains. Authorities say O'Shields gunned Toby Mathis down among the aisles of cheap merchandise last week and then fled in a getaway car driven by his sister.

O'Shields turned himself in Tuesday to face first-degree murder charge after six days on the run. The local sheriff hopes the surrender ends a feud that has created a body count equal to what the sparsely populated county considers a violent year.

"I'd like to think that everybody involved is at a place where they can take the high ground on this," said Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney. "It's another tragic ending to what ultimately wound up being about 45 seconds of bad decision-making in December."

But to some of O'Shields' friends, it was a case of mountain justice — a man getting his revenge after deciding he had enough sneering about his son's death.

"What would you do if you came face to face with your son's killer? I know he had enough," said 18-year-old Stephany Travis, a friend of the family.

The acrimony first turned deadly on a twisty mountain road in December when 20-year-old Joey O'Shields went to confront his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. Mathis had been sending him nasty text messages and taunting him in places where he would hang out, said Kim Lambrecht, the younger O'Shields' mother.

O'Shields challenged Mathis to fight like a man, Lambrecht said, but instead, Mathis got inside the truck with the ex-girlfriend. O'Shields jumped in the back and Mathis sped off.

With the truck going about 35 mph through the curves, O'Shields tumbled out and suffered injuries that sent him to a hospital where he died three hours later. Mathis was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Tension between the two families grew during the winter. They would often run into each other in the county seat of Brevard, and Lambrecht said Mathis and his friends would mockingly say they were sorry that her son was dead.

"They killed my baby and laughed about it," Lambrecht said. "They thought it was funny that I lost my son."

Several members of Mathis' family did not return phone calls from The Associated Press and were not home Tuesday when a reporter visited. A woman at the house where the girlfriend lives declined to talk to a reporter.

Both sides reported problems and harassment to the sheriff's office. Mahoney and a detective on the case won't give many specifics, but said things never escalated enough for deputies to get involved until Charles O'Shields shot Mathis on April 6.

Evidence leaves no doubt the killing was revenge for the death of O'Shields' son, said Mahoney. He won't say if the two exchanged words that night or if O'Shields threatened Mathis before the shooting.

Deputies have also arrested Charles O'Shields' sister, Dorothy Banks, and charged her with accessory after the fact in connection with a homicide. Investigators said she waited on her brother in an SUV as he went into the store.

Banks' attorney said she was glad her brother was safe, but that it wasn't proper to talk about the case at this time. O'Shields has yet to be assigned a lawyer.

O'Shields, who went by his middle name Richard, took his oldest son's death hard. Health problems that started a few days after the funeral kept him from working. His anger kept building until an encounter with Mathis and his girlfriend at a restaurant a few days before the shooting, Travis said.

"She came over to Richard and said: `I'm sorry Joey's dead.' She said it with a smirk. And she kept saying it over and over: `Joey's dead. You know we didn't want it to happen. But Joey's dead,'" Travis said. "Why couldn't they just leave him alone?"

O'Shields said nothing to them in the restaurant. But the day before the encounter at the Dollar General, Travis said he told her he was "going to do something for Joey" because things had "gotten out of hand." Both Lambrecht and Travis said trash and used fireworks were found on Joey O'Shields grave.

"He was angry. And it didn't help when Toby and (the girlfriend) would show up and taunt him," said Lambrecht, who's divorced from the older O'Shields. "He took it all in. He told me he would get Toby to stop. He would take care of it. I just knew this was going to happen. You could see it happening. There's just so much you can take before you explode."

The sheriff said the mountain county of 33,000 usually doesn't have more than 2 homicides a year. The area about 120 miles west of Charlotte touts itself as the "Land of Waterfalls," and much of its land is in the Pisgah National Forest. It's a mostly hardscrabble place, in contrast to the enclaves of million dollar homes in neighboring Cashiers or Highlands.

"To have those lives ended so quickly over something as petty as a girl, you know, I think all those components go to make it a huge tragedy," Mahoney said. "It saddens my heart to see both of those families turned upside down, two young men whose lives are lost and all for just a very short period of time when cooler heads did not prevail."

MIAMI THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY...

What will be interesting about this one is if I can stay healthy for it. Both my son and daughter have been sick. Mina's fever Saturday morning even got to a very scary 104.6 and I was set to get her to the hospital just before it began dropping. So far I haven't caught it, but you guys know how Deminski luck works. Either way I'm working. Just that if I have a high fever I may be even more delusional than usual.

QUAKE, TSUNAMI, MELTDOWN

Of all the bad that is happening in Japan, I can't help but be in awe of two small geologic facts. The quake shifted Japan's spot on the planet by 8 feet. It moved Japan 8 feet over. The quake also shifted the earth on its axis about 4 inches. This is nothing new with big earthquakes, but these numbers are bigger than usual and a sobering reminder that none of us is really in charge. In the words of Tom Petty, anything can happen, anything at all, don't think about it, you can go crazy.

Since the quake plenty of my even most rational friends have done what so many do when there's not a bad parent to blame, or a government to blame, or a video game to blame or dirty lyric to blame. They turn primitive. They begin speaking of how "God must be angry at us." "God is making us pay." "Between this and Libya and everything else it seems the end times are near."

Really? In 2004 the day after Christmas in Sumatra Indonesia an even bigger earthquake set off a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people.

On January 23rd 1556 in Shanshi China an earthquake killed 830,000 people.

There have been over 10 earthquakes that each killed more than 100,000 people. One of those ten happened in 893, another occurred in 856.

No doubt the primitives were saying the same things 455 years ago and 1,118 years ago and 1,155 years ago about God and the end of the world.

Oh don't get me wrong. I know it will happen. Whether by our sun burning out or by devastating meteor strike or man's own stupid selfish hand, it will happen. I just find it interesting that we try to distinguish ourselves to the side of safety by always categorizing from where bad things come. To the point that finally, when there's no violent video game to blame a Columbine on or any one of a plethora of scapegoats to explain away tragedy we turn to the heavens and say we've disappointed the gods.

In the end all we have to blame it on is 8 feet and 4 inches, and for so much bad and so much heartbreak that just doesn't seem satisfying.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

So I go in there and of course he'd have to have both hands and arms UNDER the pillow. I had to move his limbs, then I'm searching and searching for that damn tooth. Can't feel it anywhere. I start thinking did he knock it out? But then if he did, what if he finds it a day later on the floor somewhere and the whole myth is shot to hell. The very longshot theory occurred to me too; the toothfairy really does exist and came and got the tooth before I did but then stiffed him. Then I realized I'm the only one to whom that would happen and not my son, so I dismissed it. Swear to God it took my like 5 minutes to find the damn thing, lol. Got it, switched it with the rolled up bill, crept out. All was fine.

Then in the morning he comes and gets me and says the toothfairy took his tooth but didn't give him anything. At this point I'm thinking did my mortgage company send s.w.a.t. in at midnight to get whatever they could? I go in with him, sure enough, we're looking everywhere. No bill. So I'm stalling for time with all this bullshit about "Well it MUST be here somewhere Jack I've NEVER known the toothfairy to not give something." Finally, almost as long as it took to find the tooth, he found the bill, on the floor between the bed and a table. Must have thrashed and knocked it out. He was so happy, so proud. His sister woke up and Jack immediately told her all about it. She listened intently with big eyes, then simply said in a whisper... "awesome!" Half hour later he was playing a computer game and Mina was sitting in bed with me and I notice her finger is in her mouth. I ask what's up. She just turned 4. You know those little natural gaps between kids' baby teeth? She's feeling at those and says, "Daddy, I think I'M missing a tooth too. I need some money."

TOOTHFAIRY PRESSURE

It happened this morning at 11:25. Jack and I were driving back from getting my haircut. It had been loose for weeks. We even brought it up for a little bit of one of the Minneapolis shows because I heard so many varied opinions from parents on what the going toothfairy rate is for the first tooth. Anyway, we're driving down Woodward when he says, "Daddy it's coming out! What do I do?" I pulled over into a parking lot and before I could park I hear "I got it! I got it!" I get out of my car and open his door and there in his little fingers is the even littler tooth, a very tiny hole in the bottom roots, a very small spot of red within the hole. So cool. I was more excited than he was. I don't have a job, the house is in the middle of short sale, everything's screwed up right now, and I stood there talking to him about it feeling like the luckiest guy in the world. These were the moments I didn't want to miss.

Now of course comes the moment I'm dreading. I have a 5 dollar bill (screeching tires sound effect) okay, before I go on let's get this out of the way. Stop yelling at me. Yes, I picked 5 dollars as the amount for the first tooth. Some are yelling at me that's way too much. A few saying they'd have done 10. Mostly though I've been chastised by my friends saying I should've done 3. Look, here's the thing. This last year's been hell. I'm not going to go into the nuances of the divorce and all that happened, but the kids have been through a rough time. I've always been there for them, every night, but still so many changes have happened and especially the last few weeks the three of us are adjusting to a new life. He's still only 5 and I want him to believe in magic. He needs to believe in magic right now. So it's a 5 dollar bill, wrapped in a tight roll, with a little curly red ribbon tying it shut. Now back to the moment I'm dreading. It's 10:30. He's asleep. The tooth is dead center under his pillow. Suddenly I'm a fairy. Never been a fairy before. (Watch it!) So I have to creep in there, and make the switch. He's not a heavy sleeper. I have to probably move a hand, possibly move the head, get that tooth out, get that bill in, without waking him up. If he wakes up I have to make sure he doesn't see what's in my hand and be ready with the cover story that I'm just checking on him. My son's like me though, somewhat of a cynic. If he catches on to this, my fatherly paranoia sees the great domino collapse of the Easter Bunny gone, Santa Claus shattered, boom boom boom. Stupid? Silly? You bet. Will I wake him up? Almost surely not. It's just that we've got so little right now, I just need him to believe in this. And I guess truth be told, right now I need to believe in magic too.

So that's it. I'm goin' in! LOL

Gadhafi's vow: Will fight to 'last drop of blood'

A defiant Moammar Gadhafi vowed to fight to his "last drop of blood" and roared at supporters to strike back against Libyan protesters to defend his embattled regime Tuesday, signaling an escalation of the a crackdown that has thrown the capital into scenes of mayhem, wild shooting and bodies in the streets.

The speech by the Libyan leader — who shouted and pounded his fists on the podium — was an all-out call for his backers to impose control over the capital and take back other cities. After a week of upheaval, protesters backed by defecting army units have claimed control over almost the entire eastern half of Libya's 1,000-mile Mediterranean coast, including several oil-producing areas.

"You men and women who love Gadhafi ... get out of your homes and fill the streets," he said. "Leave your homes and attack them in their lairs."

So here's a leader actually calling for civil war in his own country. Think about that. Brother on brother, citizen on citizen, get out there, go kill 'em. Wow. Also, what's with power hungry bad leaders always referring to themselves in 3rd person. cough cough Kwamecough cough

Celebratory gunfire by Gadhafi supporters rang out in the capital of Tripoli after the leader's speech, while in protester-held Benghazi, Libya's second-largest city, people threw shoes in contempt at a screen showing his address.

So I guess if you're walking home barefoot you'll be shot on sight?

State TV showed a crowd of Gadhafi supporters in Tripoli's Green Square, raising his portrait and waving flags as they swayed to music after the address. Residents contacted by The Associated Press said no anti-government protesters ventured out of their homes after dark, and gun-toting guards manned checkpoints with occasional bursts of gunfire heard throughout the city.

International alarm rose over the crisis, which sent oil prices soaring to the highest level in more than two years on Tuesday and sparked a scramble by European and other countries to get their citizens out of the North African nation.

Oh great. Libya supplies only 2 % of the world's oil demand but prices already rose 6 %.

The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting that ended with a statement condemning the crackdown, expressing "grave concern" and calling for an "immediate end to the violence" and steps to address the legitimate demands of the Libyan people.

They also wondered aloud how a guy who looks like a cross between Bert Convy and Bob Dylan could have remained in power this long without pursuing a new Tattletales series.

Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel called Gadhafi's speech "very, very appalling," saying it "amounted to him declaring war on his own people." Libya's own deputy ambassador at the U.N., who now calls for Gadhafi's ouster, has urged the world body to enforce a no-fly zone over the country to protect protesters.

"This violence is completely unacceptable," added Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Gadhafi's retaliation has already been the harshest in the Arab world to the wave of anti-government protests sweeping the Middle East. Nearly 300 people have been killed, according to a partial count by the New York-based Human Rights Watch.

In two nights of bloodshed, Tripoli residents described a rampage by pro-Gadhafi militiamen — a mix of Libyans and foreign mercenaries — who shot on sight anyone found in the streets and opened fire from speeding vehicles at people watching from windows of their homes.

In a sign of the extent of the breakdown in Gadhafi's regime, one of his closest associates, Abdel Fattah Younis, his interior minister and commander of the powerful Thunderbolt commando brigade, announced in Benghazi that he was defecting and other armed forces should join the revolt.

"I gave up all my posts in response to the February 17 Revolution and my conviction that it has just demands," Younis, who was among the army officers who joined Gadhafi in his 1969 coup, told Al-Jazeera, referring to the date of the start of the protests.

The performance by Gadhafi on state TV Tuesday night went far beyond even the bizarre, volatile style he has been notorious for during nearly 42 years in power. Swathed in brown robes and a turban, wearing reflective sunglasses,

he at times screamed, his voice breaking, and shook his fists — then switched to reading glasses to read from a green-covered law book, losing his train of thought before launching into a new round of shouting.

He spoke from behind a podium in the entrance of his bombed-out Tripoli residence hit by U.S. airstrikes in the 1980s and left unrepaired as a symbol of defiance.

At times the camera panned back to show the outside of the building and its towering monument of a gold-colored fist crushing an American fighter jet. But the view also gave a surreal image of Gadhafi, waving his arms wildly alone in a broken-down lobby with no audience, surrounded by torn tiles dangling from the ceiling, shattered concrete pillars and bare plumbing pipes.

"Libya wants glory, Libya wants to be at the pinnacle, at the pinnacle of the world," he proclaimed, pounding his fist on the podium. "I am a fighter, a revolutionary from tents. ... I will die as a martyr at the end," he said, vowing to fight "to my last drop of blood."

He's the one who's the martyr? Not the protestor who risks everything without so much as a weapon, without the backing of an entire military, to stand before this psychopathic regime and take his chances? THAT guy's NOT the martyr but Gadhafi IS? Man I have a lot to learn.

Gadhafi portrayed the protesters as misguided youths, who had been given drugs and money by a "small, sick group" to attack police and government buildings. He said the uprising was fomented by "bearded men" — a reference to Islamic fundamentalists — and Libyans living abroad.

He urged supporters to take to the streets to attack demonstrators, saying police would not interfere.

"Go out and fight them," he added, urging youth to form local committees across the country "for the defense of the revolution and the defense of Gadhafi."

"Forward, forward, forward!" he barked at the speech's conclusion, pumping both fists in the air as he stormed away from the podium. He was kissed by about a dozen supporters, some in security force uniforms. Then he climbed into a golf cart-like vehicle and puttered away.

Golf cart? "Buy a turban like that I bet you get a free bowl of soup. Looks good on you though."

Gadhafi's call for a popular attack on protesters reflected the deeply unstable nature of the system he has created over his rule — the longest of any current Arab leader. He has long kept his military and other security forces relatively weak, fearing a challenge to his rule and uncertain of loyalties in a population of multiple tribal allegiances.

So far, the crackdown has been waged chiefly by militias and so-called "revolutionary committees," made up of Libyans and foreign fighters, many hired from other African nations.

Many army units in the east appear to have sided with protesters, and other more institutional parts of his regime have weakened. A string of ambassadors abroad have defected, as has the justice minister.

Protesters claim to control a string of cities, from the Egyptian border in the east — where guards at the crossing fled — to the city of Ajdabiya, about 450 miles farther west along the Mediterranean coast, said Tawfiq al-Shahbi, a protest organizer in the eastern city of Tobruk.

Ajdabiya is a key city near the oil fields of central and eastern Libya. Protesters and local tribesmen were protecting several of the fields and facilities around the city, said one resident, Ahmed al-Zawi.

Residents are also guarding one of Libya's main oil export ports, Zuweita, and the pipelines feeding into it, he said. The pipelines are off and several tankers that had been waiting in the port to load left empty, said al-Zawi, who said he visited Zuweita on Tuesday morning.

The first major protests to hit an OPEC country — and major supplier to Europe — sent oil prices to $95.42 per barrel. Only a small amount of Libya's oil production appeared to have been affected, though analysts fear that revolts will spread to OPEC heavyweights like Iran. Libya holds the most oil reserves in Africa.

Two oil companies on Tuesday suspended production in the country: Italy's Eni — the biggest energy producer in Libya, producing about a quarter of its exports — and Spain's Repsol-YPF, which produced 34,777 barrels in the country last year, about 3.8 percent of national output. A string of international oil companies have begun evacuating their expatriate workers or their families.

In the eastern cities of Tobruk and Benghazi, protesters raised the pre-Gadhafi flag of Libya's monarchy on public buildings. Protesters over the weekend overran police stations and security headquarters in Benghazi, taking control of the streets.

In Benghazi, celebratory residents organized themselves into units to protect property and manage traffic after pro-Gadhafi forces fled, said Farag al-Warfali, a banker. A committee was set up to organize and distribute the use of weapons confiscated from government warehouses, recruiting policemen and officers to carry the weapons for city protection, fearing a new attack.

"These are his dying words. He is a criminal and is ready to do anything. But we are ready for him," al-Warfali said of Gadhafi's speech. "Besides, most of his officers have deserted him anyway. He only has the mercenaries left."

Since Sunday, the fiercest fighting has been in Tripoli, the center of Gadhafi's rule.

At least 62 people were killed in violence in the capital since Sunday, according to the New York-based Human Rights Watch, but it cautioned that that figure came from only two hospitals. That comes on top of at least 233 people killed across the so far in the uprising, counted by the group from hospitals around the country.

Tripoli residents on Tuesday were recovering from the militia rampage through multiple neighborhoods that began the night before and lasted until dawn. Some resident ventured out to find stores open for food, wary of militia attacks.

One man in his 50s said residents of his neighborhood were piling up roadblocks of concrete, bricks and wood to try to slow attackers. He said he had seen several streets with funeral tents mourning the dead.

The night before, he had spent barricaded in his home, blankets over the windows — sitting with a kitchen knife on the table in front of him — as militiamen opened fire in nearby districts.

Think about all that. Tell me all the bad shit you've had to say about America now. We've rested under a blanket of freedom and opportunity for so long that these things don't even seem possible to us. Things like this should make us fall so deeply more in love with our country that we get butterflies in our stomachs.

Buses unloaded militia fighters in several locations, he said. Others sped in vehicles with guns mounted on the top, opening fire, including at people watching from windows. "I know of two different families, one family had a 4-year-old who was shot and killed on a balcony in the eastern part of the city, and another lady on the balcony was shot in the head," he said.

He, like other residents, contacted by The Associated Press, spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

One of the heaviest battlegrounds was the impoverished, densely populated district of Fashloum. There, militiamen shot any "moving human being" with live ammunition, including ambulances, so wounded were left in the streets to die, one resident said.

He said that as he fled the neighborhood Monday night, he ran across a group of militiamen, including foreign fighters. "The Libyans (among them) warned me to leave and showed me bodies of the dead and told me: `We were given orders to shoot anybody who moves in the place,'" said the resident.

He and other residents described dozens of bodies still in the street at daybreak Tuesday.

The head of the U.N. human rights agency, Navi Pillay, called for an investigation, saying widespread and systematic attacks against civilians "may amount to crimes against humanity."

"YOUR CAREER OR YOUR KIDS"

Although they’ve not been away long enough to warrant one of those proverbial “Where Are They Now?” features, it has been awhile since we’ve heard any news about former Detroit Talk duo Deminski & Doyle. Following a decade of individual solo on-air work, Jeff Deminski and Bill Doyle first hooked up as a team at New Jersey 101.5 (WKXW/Trenton) in 1994, where they spent the next five years hosting afternoon drive at the pioneering FM talker before making a move to The Motor City. There they spent just over eight years generating dominant numbers in afternoons at then “Hot Talk” WKRK-FM, opting to not renew their deal with the station when CBS Radio flipped it from Talk to Sports in 2007. After sitting out a 12-month non-compete, Deminski & Doyle resurfaced at crosstown Greater Media Classic Rocker WCSX where they hosted mornings for a year before all parties concluded that perhaps the duo’s show was not the best ‘fit” with the music-intensive radio station. Following an amicable parting, before long the pair got set for a move back to afternoons at a station in a major East Coast market. That’s when fate stepped in by way of an unexpected divorce for Jeff. Nevertheless, the duo continued moving forward on finalizing a deal with their soon-to-be-new radio home when Deminski received this ultimatum from his lawyer: “Make a choice, your career or your kids.” I caught up with Jeff this week to talk about the impact of that day, and to find out what’s next for the veteran Talk team.

Pick things up for us at the point where you left WCSX in early 2010.

That’s when the personal turmoil in my life first started. I don’t really want to talk about the whole divorce, but the filing had to take place in Michigan. Anyone who has been through that proceeding knows the term ‘change of domicile,’ meaning you can’t move more than 100 miles away when there are kids involved, unless you don’t care about being with your kids. The three things I loved most in my world was my job, my son and my daughter -- for me that was my life. Long story short, things turned into a pretty ugly custody fight and one day my lawyer sat across the table and said, “Jeff there is no way you are going to get a change of domicile unless you’ve first won primary custody. So you’ve got to decide right now, it’s your career or your kids.”

Wow, talk about getting a ton of bricks dropped on you.

Between radio and stand-up comedy, I have been doing what I do pretty much since I was a teenager. I always knew this is what I was meant to do. But once I had kids, I knew being a dad was the other thing I was meant to do, so this was truly ‘gut check’ time. My lawyer said I could take the weekend to think about it, but I told him there was nothing to think about -- there was no way I was ever going to leave my kids. I figured I chose the career I had, but they didn’t choose to be my son and daughter. They needed me, so it really didn’t matter what else I wanted at that point.

So the story has a pretty happy ending, right?

Yes, I was awarded custody of my children and the settlement we reached allows me to look for work anywhere. With all of that behind me, I’m now more passionate than ever about getting back on the radio. The toughest part of making that decision was that I honestly didn’t know how it would all end. I didn’t know if I’d get my kids and I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to get back on the radio after a year or so off. But now that I have my five-year old son, Jack and my four year old daughter, Mina, I know it was all worth it.

You have a partner, Bill Doyle, whose life and career have also been impacted by your situation, right?

I love that guy and his wife and kids, too. The hardest conversation I think I’ve ever had to have with anybody was the day I had to call Bill and tell him I couldn’t move to the new job we’d lined up, I had to stay in Detroit and fight for my kids. This is the guy who I’ve done great stuff with on the radio and have had wonderful chemistry with for over 15 years. Honestly, Bill’s the longest relationship I’ve ever had in my life. I told him I’d understand if he chose to move on without me, but he said he understood what I was doing and supported my decision. He said he would wait as long as he possibly could because his first priority was for us to work together again.

Any regrets, anything you’d change about the decisions you’ve

made this past year?

No. I do wish I could’ve known more about the problems in my marriage before I did, and that I could’ve given my partner more warning. But for myself -- no I don’t regret anything. Even if things don’t turn out the way we hope they will, as long as I can take care of my kids -- whatever I have to do -- it’ll all have been worth it. My son brought home one of those arts and crafts projects from school the other day, a poster that says, ‘My hero is my daddy because he helps me and my sister and keeps us happy.’ If there were a fire in my house today, the one material thing I would grab on my way out would be that.

So, what’s next?

Well we’re hooked up with Gabe Hobbs who represents us. Gabe’s a great guy and he knows everybody, so I’m really optimistic about finding the right situation at the right company. We’re already talking to a few folks, but nothing concrete to tell you about right now. But having the legal ‘noose’ off my neck and knowing that we can relocate anywhere sure is a huge relief. No matter what, I know I did the right thing. We’re ready and charged up for a whole new challenge -- wherever that may be.

MOVING CREW

Can you call it a shout out if it's in print? Screw it...shout out

to former D&D listeners Eric and Joel who were on the moving

crew at my house today and are now Florida bound. It was Eric who pointed out to me that after all this time, the profile on this blog had my industry listed as 'accounting'.

It was one of those WTF moments, lol. I went on while they were still here

and sure enough, it did. No idea why. I changed it, and would like to now confirm that

at no time past nor present have I ever been bright enough to work as

an accountant.

Before anyone asks, no, it's not me who is moving to Florida. As soon as I hear any firm future plans for the D&D show I will be sharing it here. Also want to say thanks to everyone who reads this and huge thanks to those who were kind enough to comment on the last post. After the worst year I've had each one meant a hell of a lot. Thank you.

I imagine anyone who would be reading this only stumbled upon it. That's to say I'm not dumb enough to believe anyone would still be checking in after all this time. So for the few who found these words from some random google search in the middle of a busy day, maybe you had three minutes to kill before a conference call or something and wondered what happened to those two jackasses who used to be on the air in Detroit, lol, let me tell you what very little I'm allowed.

The divorce is finally done. It was official a week into January. The last few weeks have been filled with busting up bank accounts and signing over cars and lots of bullshit that too many of us know all too well. If you're in that group you also know about domicile rules with family court and the 100 mile radius rule. Radio is a business where you sometimes need to move. 2010 was a year I needed to move to take a new job, and I could have, but I didn't, because I was fighting to be the one my children would be tucked in by most of the time. If you're in that group, you may know that when fathers feel so strongly about what's best for their children that they're willing to fight they still lose 92% of the time. Change of domicile would have been impossible to get concurrent with original awarding of custody, so every lawyer I spoke with explained to me that I couldn't move away and fight for my kids at the same time. One put it this bluntly. "It's your career or your kids, you gotta choose."

I chose my kids. I assumed at that time I would never have the chance to work in the business again, and being in my 40s had no idea what I'd be able to do. Today I received my first intent to foreclose notice from the bank. Still out of work. The way things shook out though, I'll be able to search for work now not only here but elsewhere, so I'm foolishly hopeful that after this much time and pain Bill and I will be able to soon get the show back on the air. If you're wondering how the rest of it worked out, I tucked my kids in about an hour ago.

I SHOULD BE DEAD

I read something I couldn't believe, that one hundred years ago the life expectancy was 47. I thought no way, not THAT recently. I googled life expectancy in U.S. 1900. First thing I see is this chart, year by year. This is crazy stuff. For a man, it was true. The reason this caught my eye so much is that I'm 46. So all else equal, had I been born back when, I'd be on my death bed. Wow. I knew I should have stopped paying the fucking mortgage!

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES

Just finished watching Hawaii beat Texas in a game that basically ended on a mercy rule. Hawaii now plays Japan tomorrow for the Little League Word Series Championship. In the history of the Little League World Series Hawaii and Japan have never played head to head in a championship game. And the immature part of me could only imagine the thought balloon over the Hawaii dugout filled with "This is for Pearl Harbor, BITCH!!!"

ELEVEN YEARS AGO

today, August 23rd 1999, was the first day Bill and I broadcast the show in Detroit. We had closed out our old show on the east coast only 3 days before on a Friday afternoon, moved over the weekend, and were living out of boxes and no furniture as the show debuted. Hell we didn't even know where our toothbrushes were when we took to the air here. Eventually we settled in and started having some real fun. There were more battles with management than I care to remember. What I'll never forget though is just how amazingly generous, spirited, funny, and just basically good metro Detroiters are. I wish we could all still talk every day. If you read my post of a few days back about why I stopped posting, then you know what's happened. Just want to say if we really never get the chance again to hang out through the coolness of radio, thank you for those years. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for 'getting' us. If there's one thing the show did for a lot of folks it was made them realize they weren't alone. Each of you helped me in that regard too.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a shinebox to get.

WHY I STOPPED POSTING

My life got more complicated a few months ago. In addition to being out of work, I found out things that meant I had to file for divorce. I think many of you know how I feel about my children, so you would know this is about the last thing I'd ever want to happen but my hand was forced. That's all I really should say about it as it is ongoing. I had already been very hands on with my kids, but let's just say the last few months I've had to be even more so, and between taking care of them, the divorce itself, and looking for work, it's been pretty much all-consuming. I'm sorry I let so many of you down between the show disappearing, and then me disappearing. Also, I don't know that the show will ever return now, as I can't move from a hundred mile radius once this goes through, and unless an opportunity came up right here which doesn't look likely, it means I had to choose between my career of 25 years or my kids. I chose my kids. I hope everyone's doing great and if we see each other around town please don't hesitate to say hi, cuz I miss you guys, I really do.

Cops: Lions chief blew more than twice legal limit

PRUDENVILLE -- Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand failed field sobriety tests, and his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit in two breath tests administered by Roscommon County Sheriff’s deputies who observed him driving erratically late Friday and arrested him, according to a police report.

Lewand also told deputies he had not had a drink for a year and a half, the report said.

“The driver stated that he was the designated driver,” a deputy wrote, adding that Lewand said he went to the Limberlost bar in Denton Township “to pick a friend up.”

The deputy noted that there was a “strong odor of intoxicants coming from the driver compartment of the vehicle” and that Lewand’s eyes were “glossy and bloodshot.”

The report says Lewand performed a couple of field sobriety tests but did not walk heel to toe, as requested, and could not balance on one leg. He also touched his upper lip when asked to put his finger to his nose.

So they made him quarterback.

This is a good one. Connecticut Attorney General and senate candidate Richard Blumenthal said today he had "misspoken" in claiming...more than once...that he'd served in Vietnam. He dismissed the controversy as a matter of "a few misplaced words".

He said he meant to say he served "during Vietnam" and not "in Vietnam".

I suppose when he said "I was deep in the bush catchin' fire from Charlie all around" what he MEANT to say was "I was elbow deep in paperwork as an army file clerk in Nebraska".

When he said "I dismantled a trip wire and saved a platoon" he meant to say "I got a paper cut in Nebraska".

When he said "I was one of the last men out at the fall of Saigon as the Vietcong rained Hellfire down upon us" he meant to say "It was rainy in Nebraska".

Darn those few misplaced words.

And yes, I know he wasn't really stationed in Nebraska.

Reason: WPHT carries Phillies games, and last night's game in Colorado was rained out so they scheduled a double header for today. The weather there continues to be dicey. ERNIE HARWELL DIED TONIGHT

Legendary voice of Tigers baseball and one of the most beloved people in Michigan died tonight at the age of 92 exactly 8 months to the day he revealed to the world that this would happen. He passed away at his apartment in Novi with Lulu, his wife of 68 years, at his side.

I had the honor of talking with Ernie Harwell several times over two different stations in Detroit. It's my opinion the person taking his death the least hard is Ernie. Always a man of faith, when Ernie announced his illness 8 months ago I was struck with how absolutely sincere he was in his acceptance. In a world where we don't ever seem to know for sure if we're doing the right thing, where marriages come and go like a spring melt, and where marriages don't last 68 years and careers don't stay in one place for over 40 seasons, where we're too damn stressed out to know who we even are or what we really want, Ernie Harwell knew who he was. He knew he loved Lulu. He knew he was man of God. And Ernie Harwell knew he was dying and seemed so calm, so resolute in his faith, that he seemed the embodiment of peace.

Ernie Harwell was about the best storyteller you could imagine. He seemed to be an even better human being. Read Corinthians 13 and see how much of it can remind you of Ernie. I didn't really know him. It was just an honor to know of him.

Nor will we be placing Rudy in a precarious situation to play Guess What's In The Dumpster. Nor will we have Pat The Weirdo covered in cat food and attacked by dogs. Nor will we have a live taser demonstration. Nor will we EVER AGAIN have a live taser demonstration. Nor will we ask Pat The Weirdo to show his foot deformities to a live in-studio audience. Nor will we perform an on-air wedding. Nor an on-air bachelor party for that matter. Nor will we have Shane waxed by a tranny.

Nor will I ever understand why this crazy show worked as well as it did.

IS THE SHOW COMING BACK?

I get asked this almost every day. A D&D guy named Tim who does landscaping came up to me at Target yesterday asking me. I was with my impatient little 3 yr. old girl or I would have talked longer. Gave the short answer of I hope so and yes Detroit would be nice, but I honestly have no idea. Had I had more time, this is the longer answer I would have given.

Shows like ours were rare to begin with. A show that was all talk to NOT talk exclusively about politics or to be a sleaze show are rare. We were fortunate to have worked for two stations in 15 years that trusted us to draw in our unique way. We could do a serious even controversial, sometimes political, issue one segment, and move on and do something stupid, light and funny the next. And it worked. A little something called ppm happened in the world of radio ratings in the biggest of markets about a year and a few months ago. PPM stands for personal people meter.

First, the old system. The old system was a 'recall' system and involved people taking part in the ratings survey filling out a diary for one week. For one week of their lives, they would have a diary supplied by Arbitron (the ratings survey company) and they would in theory fill out as they listened what they were listening to. Among the complaints about this were that if people really liked a show, they might write down that they listened to the entire thing, all 4 hours say, when in reality they maybe only listened an hour and a half. I think the upside of the old diary system was that under a recall system (recall here meaning simply you remember and write down what you're listening to) the more loyal a listener, the more involved a listener, the more you have an impact on that listeners life, the more passionate the listener, the more they'll remember you and write you down. Yes, the exact times of listening may have been somewhat flawed. But the level of involvement for the listener is, in my opinion, certainly represented when they're being asked basically what radio shows mean the most to you. Another upside of the diary system is that the sample size was much, much larger. Still based on only a fraction of the actual population, but far greater than the fraction of a fraction that is the sampling size with ppm.

Now then, the news system of the personal people meter. In the biggest markets they no longer have people fill out a diary and they don't have nearly as many people taking part in the survey and those they DO have are kept for very long periods of time. So much so that Arbitron has no longer even been forthright with much of this information. The personal people meter is a little electronic device about the size of those old fashioned pagers. You can clip it on a belt if you're a guy. One reason formats that favor women tend to not do as well in ratings now is that females have fewer options of actually wearing the people meter on their clothing. They don't wear things that are very 'clippable' like belts, and even when they might ladies tend to care what they look like throughout the day and are less likely to want to have this ugly little box on them. Seriously, it comes down to things like this. So male formats they say do somewhat better because the compliance rate for men is higher. This box you wear or at least keep with you at all times, it picks up a secret signal now embedded within the broadcast signal of each station, each station having its own unique signal. So this box will record whatever signal is being put out by whatever audible radio it is near. There's good and bad to this. Good is in theory it should be much more accurate. What's bad is if you even just walk into a store and are in there for 5 minutes, and the radio they're playing behind the counter is loud enough your box will record whatever that store is listening to as your choice. What stations do so many retailers play and do so many offices allow? The ones that are largely background filled with 'safe' music that no one's really listening much to, but the box doesn't record interest levels or impact levels. It only records what's in front of it. As a result, many more stations in reaction to this new ppm system (which by the way has even been called into question for inaccuracies by congress) are offering a lot more music. Many other stations are scared off by talk.

This is the result. Dick Purtan said it best after announcing his retirement. You're left with either pure talk (and that's almost always the traditional serious minded news/talk programming where it's politics and issues) or all music. You're not getting as much variety. Where I'm going with this long explanation of how it's all happening is that there are fewer places for shows like ours to exist. It's been happening to true entertaining talk personalities all over the country. What's left is sports talk, which we're not, traditional news/talk which is part of what we can do, and music shows that MAY allow some fun personality to get through. It's looking more like our choices both involve change. Either stick to our lighter more fun side but accept it in smaller doses mixed with music. Or tap more full time into our serious side and go the more traditional news/talk route.

Now that's a LOT of explanation, but I kinda feel I owe it to people who've been following us for ten years here in Detroit, and other folks back in New Jersey for 15. None of this should be taken as griping or grousing. We were a top 5 show adults 25-54 several times in 2009 and once even number 2. I believe both ratings systems have flaws, and I believe both have good points too.

Now had I tried to say all this to poor Tim the landscaper at Target A) security would tell me to shut up and get out and B) poor Tim's eyes would've probably glazed over.

ONE NIGHT STAND PART TWO

Bill and I are doing another fill-in show for two hours Wednesday night the 17th in Philadelphia on a CBS owned news/talk station, WPHT. Anyone who cares to listen may through http://www.thebigtalker1210.com/ 10 pm to midnight.
This is a solid, traditional news/talk station so don't expect us to be making Rudy eat dog food. Lots of call in opportunity and talk about issues such as how upset some are getting that the word 'negro' is being used on the census forms we all just got. Things like that.
For me an interesting thing is that this falls late on St. Patrick's Day, so I wonder what kind of calls we could get, lol. You know what I'm saying.

Oh, met a couple more D&D listeners this week, one at the CVS on 13 Mile & Woodward, another at D&D (no connection) Bicycle shop on 12 Mile at Greenfield. Just wanted to say thanks for not being shy! I like it when people speak up that they recognize us cuz I honestly DO want to keep in touch with you guys! We're asked all the time if we're staying here. Just don't know. If something comes up that we're right for, then yes, of course. We'll see. Not a very satisfying answer I know, but it's the only one I have right now. But believe me, we're working on it.

ONE NIGHT STAND

SEX OR RADIO

Somebody asked me which I'd give up for life if I could have as much of the other that I wanted. Is it pathetic that my first reaction is I'd give up sex for a great radio situation? I wouldn't expect to be paid much for doing either, but at least with radio I don't have to take my shirt off. Also I already own headphones. And if sex were permanently gone think of all the money I could save on toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, etcetera. Hmmm. Yes I think I'd choose a great radio situation. Still searching for that, and I've read all the emails about certain scenarios and whether I'd be interested in certain things. For obvious reasons I can't answer those questions. But I will say if there were a way to still be a part of Detroit that could really move this old D&D thing forward, I'd be interested. I feel badly that I'm not answering every email but so many of them are direct questions asking about certain job openings and even whether I'd like listeners to start 'petition drives' or 'email campaigns' to help get us back on air at certain places. I think folks don't realize how much this business has changed and how carefully some of these decisions are scrutinized. It's big hearted for you guys to offer to do things like that, and obviously you can do what you'd like but, I just don't see business matters being swayed that way. Hopefully someone here will see the worth in the show. Even if not what will always matter to me more is that for so many years you all did.

FRIDAY NIGHT

For anyone who missed the last get-together I'll be hanging out at Snookers on Hall Rd. in Utica tomorrow night (Fri. Feb. 12th) from about 8pm till maybe midnight. I hope you can make it out because this will probably be the only other time I can do this due to A) money, B) might be traveling a lot soon, and C) crap going on at home.

Just a small gathering, not some big crazy station event (Snookers doesn't even know anything about this; just one of my favorite places that I picked), just probably a dozen or so of us knocking back a few. Okay knocking back a lot, lol.

THE STOLEN UNDERWEAR STORY

I stole boy's underwear from Target this week. I didn't mean to. I had both my kids, 3 and 4, and I need to point out they were getting increasingly tired and cranky. Threw everything in the top part of the cart because I needed the whole large part to accommodate a large box with a microwave in it. What I forgot was the very first thing I threw in that big part of the cart was boys' underwear for my kid. Then that big box went on top. You see where this is going. The cashier didn't make me take the huge box out; just scanned it in the cart. I never thought about the underwear. She never asked if there was anything beneath the box. Didn't notice it till outside, both kids were strapped into car seats, and I unloaded the cart. At this point it's late, it's freezing, the kids are both screaming about some nonsense, and I'm thinking screw it. Score one for Deminski. Didn't MEAN to do it anyway. But by the time I got home it was already bothering me. It was 25 dollars worth. Batman glow in the dark briefs. Now seriously, when you're 4, that's a total chick magnet. (What?) Plus other underwear. Told a friend that next day I was going back to Target to pay for them. He told me I was stupid. Thanks friend. So anyway, I did. I brought them back inside to custom service and explained what happened. And that I wanted to pay for them. The girl looks at me like I've grown a second face or a third eye or like I'm actually WEARING glow in the dark Batman briefs or something, and says, "And you came back?" She thanked me, took my money, I took my briefs, and I'm pretty sure as I walked away I could hear her thinking, "stupid!" Thanks friend.

This Friday Feb. 12th Snookers on Hall Rd. in Utica, 8pm. Come hang out. It's the last of my beer money before I'm broke so come have a few with me! Don't think I'll be getting out any time again soon. Would be great to see ya. Oh and again this is nothing official so don't call Snookers asking about this. They know nothing about it. Just a place I picked that I like to meet up with a couple of you and have a few drinks, that's all. So just look for me.

for coming out to Mr. B's, Jen and Kim, Jennifer, Supersize Scott (funniest moment for me was when a guy took one look at Scott, didn't hear his name or anything, and goes, "That's the guy who fell through the toilet in the trailer park isn't it."), said guy from New England and his buddy, don't think I caught your names guys, Pat The Weirdo who was sporting his hey-look-at-me-crazy-black-and-red-safari-hat-straight-out-of-The-Game-pickup-artist-book, Photographic Memory Dennis, Steve from Waterford and his buddy Dan, the couple who's names I'm still too hung over to remember and I apologize very much for that but she took lots of pictures and he got "lit", cool guy named Eric, the couple that caught me just as I was heading out and they had driven an hour just to get there so like a Bruce Springsteen tune I went back inside had a few drinks and all we kept talkin' about was glory days, and everyone else. Thanks for a fun time!

If you didn't come out but would like to grab a couple cold ones I'll be knocking back a few at Snooker's on Hall Rd. in Utica on Friday night February 12th from 8pm till maybe midnight. SOFAS AND SPIDERS DON'T MIX

I have a situation that I'd love to get some advice on. I have this sectional sofa that's been in storage for over a year. Out of the elements, but not airtight and not heated in the winter nor cooled in the summer. So yes there's been a lot of bugs in that storage unit. In fact I've even seen those little balls stuck in webs that I believe to be spider eggs in different parts of the unit.

Well now I need the sofa. It was up off the floor, some sheets thrown over it, but it was not shrink wrapped or anything.

What would you do to it to make sure you didn't wake up with five thousand spiders crawling out of the thing? Is a simple bug bomb really going to be enough? Is there some company that will fumigate individual pieces of furniture? Do I just throw it out? I don't have arachnophobia, but I don't want thousands of miniature friends living rent free either. Your comments or emails would be appreciated.

220 221 whatever it takes

The Mr. Mom thing today had me attending back-t0-back birthday parties. I have a 4 yr old and a 3 yr old and the parties fell on the same day. One ended an hour before the other one started. I now know why they serve beer at Chuck E Cheese. Sensory overload. And OMG, one of the parties had 80 percents girls. I never noticed until today the level of hearing damage that occurs when mostly girls decide to all scream at once. It goes front row at a rock concert, 5 year old girls all screaming at once, then thermonuclear explosion.

So, help me out, I need a drink.

TEN DAYS

into the show being in cold storage and yes, I'm bored. I'd like to tell you what we're looking into but I don't want to jeopardize anything. I will tell you there's not a lot going on these days. Radio as an industry, like most industries, is hurting, and budgets are real problems. Maybe I'll just become a personal trainer, hahaha. If you knew me you'd get the joke.

So I had this great morning taking my daughter Mina who turns 3 this weekend out to Twelve Oaks Mall, just her and me. I often don't get enough one on one time with the kids so those times are special, and this morning was really cool. To have her at that age where we can have actual conversations about things is so cool. We end up going to Max and Erma's in the mall for lunch. She can be a terror other times, but this time she was so well behaved she might as well have been 10. I thought I had this touching moment where she's looking around the restaurant and puts down her food and looks at me very seriously and says, "This is a very nice place." It seemed so mature, almost like to a 3 year old she was appreciating Max and Erma's as fine dining. I say I THOUGHT I had this touching moment because when I got home and told my wife, she pointed out that she was merely repeating a line said by Giselle in the kid's movie Enchanted. Insert Price Is Right buzzkill music here. I'm sitting there thinking how grown up she's acting and all she was doing was what I've done for years, quoting movie lines. Lines from Scarface, Goodfellas, As Good As It Gets, Tombstone...it all came back to haunt me.

I was thinking about organizing a small night out for any of you who might want to hoist a few. I wish I could buy for everyone but under the current situation I can't, I'm sorry. However no one needs to buy for me! Just would like to get together with whoever wants to. Assuming a Friday or Saturday night would work best but if anyone has any thoughts on the matter please feel free to either comment or write me at jeffdeminski@comcast.net which is my personal email but pretty much everyone has it. THE REAL SCOOP

This is very funny. A listener let me know about this. I didn't even bother reading the link although I'm sure it was very entertaining. You guys remember about half a year ago when we talked about how it was frustrating the way some bikers (bicyclists) took their 'right to the road' to an almost zealot level and would not get out of your way while doing far below the speed limit? We were talking about the types who would ride three abreast at 13 mph in a 35 road, almost defiantly being a pain in the ass? Well now half a year later, some bikers' association or something or another is claiming THEY are the reason we moved on from WCSX, because of their complaints in other words. Riiiight. I told you they were nuts.

Coming off 13 straight hours watching my two yr. old and four yr. old. 220, 221, whatever it takes. On a fifteen minute breather and thought I'd say hi to you folks. Thanks for all the email and kind words. Check back in here to find out if we land something in town or somewhere else or if we slowly starve to death beneath an overpass. Either way I'm sure good stories will follow.

Oh special hi to Heather who I met...whom I met?...this chick I met at Chuck E Cheese on John R today. We both happened to take our kids there at the same time and she is, like many of you, a long time listener going back to 2000 or 1999. Very cool person and it made me miss ALL our listeners. Also makes me long for the kind of station where we can be more interactive with you guys again like the 97.1 days.

Okay, back to the kids and having to say things like, "You can stick it in my ear but you CAN'T pull the trigger!" and "If your sister wants to poop she'll tell me!"

DEMINSKI & DOYLE - HEY, WHA' HAPPENED?

As of 9:00 am January 4th I am no longer working for WCSX nor is my partner in crime of 16 years Bill Doyle.

When Greater Media first approached us they wanted the show as it was, a talk show, the same as we'd always done in the Detroit market. They hired us in for morning drive to do just that, but they very quickly decided that doing talk on an otherwise all music station was more radical for their 'CSX audience than they realized, and they simply wanted to get back to their roots. Throughout 2009 we were offered the chance to change the show to a music intensive one, but we're not disc jockeys and didn't want to become that. In the end, we both came to the agreement it was best to chalk it up to creative differences and part amicably. I also want to thank them for being classy enough to allow us the chance to say farewell on-air. There are some great people there for whom I wish nothing but the best. KC (Ken Calvert) is indeed the casual one; incredibly down to earth, funny gentleman. Karen Savelly is such a pro and truly one of the nicest people I've met in the business. Steve Kostan is probably the most knowledgeable classic rock jock anywhere, and while I never got the chance to run into him that much he was always a cool guy when I did. Uncle Buck who does overnights there (so I'd see him every morning at 4 am when I rolled in) is my fellow Springsteen-addict-brother-in-arms and I hope I always know him. So many people who work off air who's names you never know but who are terrific as well.

Thanks for all the calls, texts and emails from all of you. I want to say I'm sorry about how 2009 turned out, but a show and it's station has to be on the same page, period. I know the main thing folks want to know is "what now?", and what I can tell you is for right now we're both still living in metro Detroit but looking everywhere. It would be great to find a station in Detroit again that would actually want and commit to what we do, but the national economy has left the entire industry in a bad way and we have to be realistic. We'd be fortunate to find that station anywhere. If we land something here in the Motor City you'll hear of it right here a.s.a.p.. If we need to move away I'll certainly let you know that too.

Many of you will be asking about the others, so let me give you the rundown. Jamie Samuelsen was doing our sports and he is still there in mornings on WCSX. He'll be doing sports for Ken Calvert's new morning show. Same for Nicole Salem who remains doing traffic for KC. I'm not sure what's going on with Rudy Desantis at this point. Jim O'Brien who was our producer for just this past year will remain with WCSX. He was one of their guys to begin with; had been there at least 6 years before we got there.
